Villas of the Veneto Tour

Veneto is the region of Venice and its countryside boasts a wealth of grand villas with stunning gardens. These were (and some still are) the villas owned by rich Venetian aristocrats and here is where they retired for their ‘vacanze’. Many of the villas we visit were designed by Andrea Palladio, one of the most influential individuals in the history of Western architecture. Join us as we discover some of the best Palladian Villas.

Talk on Zoom The Rise and Fall of the House of Savoy 2nd Part

The House of Savoy arose as a powerful family around the year 1000. They were counts, then dukes, then princes, then kings of Italy. But who were they really?

In my first talk I will consider their origins and analyse how they endured centuries of European politics and wars to emerge as the oldest ruling house in Europe.

In my second talk I will discuss the events of the last two centuries. What sort of rulers were the Savoys? What were their passions and intrigues? Which of their actions determined their fall from grace with the Italian people?

Throughout these talks I will also introduce you to some of the Savoy family's beautiful residences and their legacy in Italian architecture.

The story of a beautiful palazzo which is linked to the vineyard and the process of rediscovering the vineyard are both fascinating and I believe they deserve to be told.
